Maclellan and MacAulay families of North Uist have always
been closely linked. Tradition is that two MacAulay brothers, accompanied by a MacLellan nephew (i.e. son of one of their sisters) were brought to South Uist c1600 by Lord MacDonald of Clanranald, the then owner of South Uist, as groomsmen for his horses. The MacAulay brothers and their MacLellan nephew came from either Coll or Tiree.
After a few years in South Uist the three moved up to the
Baleshare area of North Uist and at a still later date some of the MacAulays and MacLellans from Baleshare moved up to the Bayhead area. All MacAulay's and MacLellan's in North Uist are believed to have originated from these three individuals.
